TLJ Gunner helmet?

Post by JIMBOJAG » Sun Dec 31, 2017 10:16 pm

Just wondering if anyone has plans on building the new gunner helmet as seen in The Last Jedi?

There probably will be a CRL once we get more screen shots to work with.

Yes, especially since the helmet is on display at the Disney resorts. We just need to get some good references of the suit.

I got a first-hand look at the helmet at DLR over the weekend. From what I can tell, it is a three part helmet. There is the helmet base, the shroud, and the visor. The shroud looks to be a single piece either vac-formed or fiberglass that slides onto the base. The base appears to be a shell with detail sections at the "ears". If they were shaped a little differently, I would say it was a motorcycle helmet with the visor removed and the ear details were the mount points for the original visor.

The visor is mounted directly to the shroud. It just sits in front like a reversed welding visor. There is a huge gap between the visor and the base. It's not sealed on the bottom in any picture I took. I'll get those posted soon.

One good thing is that this helmet will not require additional ventilation. It's essentially an open faced helmet. The bad news is that for gunners in rainy areas, water is going to funnel down the inside of visor and right onto the jacket.

Good catch. That means for us in snowy areas we are going to get melt down the jacket too. When it isn’t raining here it’s snowing ;)
I really like the look of the helmet though.
The Last Jedi Visual Dictionary had a picture and the name of a character. As well as the new Gunnery Officer. I might grab a copy tonight.

I would like this helmet so much more if it wasn't for that giant rhino horn in the front.
I want to say "I don't understand why it sticks up so far so far in the front", but then the argument can be made "why does the OT have the jaw and swoop that stick out so far"...
Good luck to everyone working on this costume!

My theory is that the jawbone provides flash protection if you look up.

It is interesting looking, it would be nice to see what it looks like when it's worn.
